Before You Say "I DO" - Questions to Ask Your Future Spouse... (163 hits)

1. "How are we going to handle birth control when we are married?"

For most couples, the main issue of birth control will revolve around the question: Who will be responsible for our birth control? Or, in other words, will you be looking at birth control from a woman's perspective (the pill, injection, diaphragm, tubal ligation, etc.) or from a man's (c*ndom, vasectomy)?

I always like to remind couples, however, that no birth control method is 100 percent effective--not even vasectomies and tubal ligations. I know one couple who, after the birth of their twins, opted for a tubal ligation. Imagine their shock when, five years later, they learned that they were going to be parents again! The doctors told them it was a one-in-a-million chance that the ligation would not work...and they hit the lottery!

Family planning is wonderful, but be prepared for the unexpected

2. "What is your morning routine?"

If you don't know your future spouse's morning routine, you should definitely find out. All of us have our own idiosyncrasies--from the way we rise from bed to the way we brush our teeth and eat our breakfast. Some people are morning glories--up with the sunshine with a smile on their faces. Other folks rise as if shaken from death and do not come alive until after the first cup of coffee or the completion of the morning paper.

Rituals are important to our lives. Without these morning rituals, in particular, we would be late for work or school; breaks from routine are especially disorienting at this groggy time of the day. My wife and I have developed such a highly refined ritual of rising, showering, and dressing that we barely acknowledge each other until after we have finished breakfast. And we like it that way!

Knowing what to expect from your spouse in the morning will help you both to get off to a good start. If either of you is not a morning person, you should make this clear up-front.

P.S. This tip might save your honeymoon.
