Assistant Professor, Music
FT/PT: Full-Time

General Position Description:
Primarily responsible for teaching in the discipline(s) in which they are credentialed and assigned. Responsible for facilitation of student learning and academic success through high-quality instruction, development of course materials, and student support. Delivers course content across a variety of modalities—including synchronous and asynchronous formats—while utilizing varied teaching methods and instructional technologies. Supports institutional goals through active participation in discipline-specific and collegewide meetings, compliance requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives. Develops the Essential Competencies of a Valencia Educator through engagement with faculty development, demonstrating a commitment to holistic student development and support, learning-centered teaching strategies, learning outcomes-based assessment, professional growth and development, and student-focused teaching practice.

Description of Job Function:
1. Facilitates student learning by delivering course material, guiding student interactions, and employing various teaching methods and technologies to engage students in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.

2. Designs and adapts course materials, instructional methods, and assessments to ensure relevance, quality, accessibility, and alignment with academic and industry standards.

3. Plans and prepares instruction across different courses, multiple modalities, and varying parts of term, integrating learning management systems, digital tools, and emerging technologies to enhance curriculum presentation, student engagement, and communication.

4. Develops assignments, exams, and projects aligned with course objectives to measure learning outcomes effectively. Provides timely, meaningful feedback to guide improvement, ensuring objective and consistent student evaluations. Incorporates universal design principles and adheres to accessibility standards to promote academic integrity, fairness, and honesty in the learning process.

5. Engages in prompt and proactive communication with students to clarify course content, address questions or concerns, and offer individualized academic support through one-on-one or small-group interactions, while providing constructive guidance to reinforce learning and progress.

6. Supports student success by identifying individual needs, connecting students to appropriate college resources (e.g., academic advising, counseling, tutoring, financial aid, career services), and providing guidance in academic, personal, and professional development to foster college success behaviors and career readiness.

7. Engages in institutional initiatives by attending and contributing to department, division, and college meetings, participating in faculty hiring, and ensuring compliance with policies, accreditation standards, and academic requirements. Contributes to the enhancement of academic quality and alignment by reviewing and approving courses, instructional materials, and discipline resources.

8. Supports institutional effectiveness and continuous improvement by participating in assessment activities, learning outcomes evaluation, and accreditation processes. Prepares and submits required documentation to promote instructional quality and overall success.

9. Engages in continuous professional development and maintains qualifications. Participates in courses, conferences, workshops, and other learning opportunities to enhance teaching effectiveness, industry expertise, field knowledge, and student success while maintaining required licensures and certifications in compliance with industry standards.

10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Skill in facilitating learning through the delivery of engaging and effective instruction across multiple modalities, guided student interactions, and the use of various teaching methods, instructional technologies, and active learning strategies to enhance student engagement and comprehension.

2. Ability to apply learning outcomes-based assessment principles to align course instruction with student learning outcomes, evaluate student progress, and provide meaningful feedback through formative and summative assessments that foster critical thinking, self-directed learning, and overall academic growth.

3. Knowledge of instructional design, curriculum development, and content alignment to create and regularly revise course materials, assessments, and delivery methods across multiple modalities that meet academic and industry standards.

4. Knowledge of educational technology and its application in instruction to enhance student engagement through learning management systems, digital tools, and emerging technologies.

5. Ability to design accessible course content and learning materials that meet varying student needs while implementing strategies that ensure fairness in assessments, foster student accountability, and uphold academic integrity and standards.

6. Ability to provide proactive academic support through timely communication, course-related outreach, and targeted assistance outside of class while applying best practices in student engagement to foster motivation, persistence, and academic success across various learning environments.

7. Skill in identifying student needs, connecting them to institutional resources, and supporting holistic student growth by guiding them in academic planning, skill building, and career exploration to promote both academic and personal success.

8. Knowledge of institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements to support curriculum approval processes, ensure institutional accountability, and maintain accurate documentation and reporting.

9. Ability to commit to ongoing professional development and reflective teaching practices by engaging in courses, learning opportunities, and industry updates to enhance instructional effectiveness, while maintaining required licensures and certifications through timely renewal and compliance with industry standards to uphold professional qualifications.


General Working Conditions:
This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
